The former U.S. President James A. Garfield lived in Hiram as a student, instructor, and principal at Western Reserve Eclectic Institute, now Hiram College. He married and had several children with his wife in Hiram. Garfield's home is on Hinsdale Street in Hiram and is presently owned by Hiram College.
Garfield (November 19, 1831 – September 19, 1881) was the 20th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881, until his assassination later that year.
It is claimed that the house is haunted, and its spectral inhabitants include the former President himself. Phenomena included lights and taps turning on by themselves; the feeling of a presence; intense cold areas; objects moving; and the smell of cigar smoke (which was an apparent favourite of Garfield).
Tape recordings at the house also allegedly recorded various sounds and voices, which were attributed to the ethereal occupants of the building. Ed and Lorraine Warren also visited the address in 1979.
