The Ohio State Reformatory, also known as the Mansfield Reformatory, is an historic former prison. It was constructed between 1886 and 1910 and remained in operation until 1990. It was used in the film The Shawshank Redemption, as well as being used in a number of other films and shows. It is now open to tourists, and due to its haunted reputation ghost tours are available.
According to sources, there are a number of areas where phenomena have been reported. These include the Basement, the Chapel, the Warden's Residence, the East Hall and West Wing.
Effects include the sounds of growling, footsteps, cell doors slamming shut and disembodied voices; the smell of roses; physical pushes and pulled hair by something unseen; and difficulty breathing. Apparitions include various "shadowy figures" and a "whitish figure".
Amateur ghost hunters claim to have obtained EVP recordings and photographic anomalies.
