The Jonathan Corwin House, Salem

Joshua Ward House

The Joshua Ward House was built in 1784, and is one of the first brick houses in Salem. It was built on the same site as the former home of Sheriff George Corwin, famously associated with the Salem witch trials. George Washington is reported to have specifically requested staying in this house when he visited Salem in 1789. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

According to a number of sources, various types of phenomenon have been reported. These include the apparition of a woman seen inside the building, people being touched by invisible hands, the sounds of footsteps, candles being found in out of shape and objects moving of their own accord.

Photographic anomalies have allegedly been obtained in the premises. The building comprises of businesses and private appartments and is not open to the public, so please respect the privacy of its occupants.

The Ropes Mansion

The Ropes Mansion is a Georgian Colonial mansion and was constructed in the late 1720s). It is now operated by the Peabody Essex Museum and open to the public. The exterior of the house was featured in the Disney film, Hocus Pocus (1993).

This significant property is reputedly haunted by two members of the same family - Judge Nathaniel Ropes and his relative, Abigail. Their apparitions have been sighted inside the building.

Also reported are disembodied whispering and the touch of invisible icey cold hands.

Jonathan Corwin House

The Jonathan Corwin House is also known as The Witch House, due to it being the only structure still standing in Salem with direct ties to the Salem witch trials of 1692. Built between 1620 and 1642, it was the home of Judge Jonathan Corwin from 1675 and he lived there for more than forty years.

According to various mediumistic sources, phenomena include the presences of a number of male spirits including that of an angry man. Two female presences have also been reported.

There have also been reports of the feeling of being watched by something unsee, and audible effects include footseps and whispering heard around the building.
