Mystery Castle

Mystery Castle was constructed by Boyce Gully between 1930 and 1945, and is made of local stone and recycled local materials. It comprises "eighteen rooms, thirteen fireplaces, parapets and many charming nooks and crannies, then furnished it with southwestern antiques". The castle is listed in the Arizona Historic Register, and is open for tours. It is certainly worth a visit for this... and its ghosts!

The building is reputed to be haunted by the ghost of a little girl that has been reported wandering through it. Some claim this to be Mary Lou Gulley, the daughter of Boyce Gulley. She did not die in childhood. In fact she only knew of the existance of the Castle after her fathers death from Tuberculosis. The whole ediice was to be a surprise for her.

According to sources, the phantom child has been heard asking where her Daddy is, and occasionally witnesses feel a small invisible hand attempting to hold theirs or a tug at their clothing. Also reported are the sounds of a "deep, wracking cough" leading some to surmise that Boyce Gulley also lingers after death.
